Dear Friends,
As the cold sets in a lot of people are making heavier fall and winter meals to eat while drinking nice big reds. At The Wine Thief we would like to help you decide on what wine to serve with those hearty meals. We would like to provide a few suggestions with some of the most common meals of the season: beef short ribs, big turkey dinner or nice juicy prime rib.
Beef Short Ribs
If you have never made beef short ribs you are missing out! They are a great hearty fall & winter meal especially when served on a bed of creamy Polenta. You need a full-bodied red to match all the rich flavors such as Zinfandel, Syrah, or Cabernet Sauvignon. If you want to try making short ribs check out this recipe we made last week, it was absolutely delicious: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/cabernet-short-ribs-parmesan-50400000115810/
Turkey Dinner
Turkey dinners are usually complicated to match wines to due to the different types of side dishes served with the meal. Thankfully there are some wine matching options to help your meal pop. If you prefer reds, a fruity Zinfandel is the way to go, however, Merlot, Syrah, Beaujolais and New-world style Pinot Noir all work wonderfully. We tend to like whites and sparklers with our turkey dinners especially Gewurtztraminer, Riesling (dry), California Chardonnay and Brut and/or Rose sparkling wine.
Prime Rib
Prime Rib is the grand daddy cut of beef and when cooked right is downright sublime. For a nice Prime Rib the best matches are without a doubt red wines, especially young Red Burgundy and Merlot for its nice fruitiness and tannins which work well to cut through the fattiness of the meat.
Whatever you eat this Fall and Winter let us know so we can help you find a wine to match your meal. Also remember if you want a particular wine for a special occasion we can order it for you, just let us know!
Sparkling Wine Event – Dec 9
Last thing to note is we have an upcoming sparkling wine event where you will get a chance to try both Champagnes and sparklers from around the world. We will be holding this event on Dec 9. Tasting fee is $5 for non-members and FREE for wine club members.
Your friends,
